In the late 1800‘s, a new route on the Southern California railroad gave life to the city of Del Mar. Theodore Loop, who built the railroad, liked the area so much that he told people he had found “the most attractive place on the entire coast.

Loop met a rancher from New Mexico named Jacob Taylor who purchased 338 acres of real estate and set about creating a resort town for the rich and famous, which Loop’s wife named “Del Mar, from the famous poem “The Fight of Paseo Del Mar. Taylor initially built 40 small houses and listed the homes for sale. He then built a two story Victorian schoolhouse, an observation tower, a train depot and a water system. Del Mar became a popular California vacation destination.

The world-class hotel, the Stratford Inn was built in the Del Mar village in 1909, and it quickly became the desired destination for Hollywood’s silent film stars. The Del Mar Fairgrounds were built in 1936, and has been the permanent home to the San Diego County Fair ever since. The track, which was founded by Bing Crosby and Pat O’Brien, was hailed as Bing's Baby or Movieland's Own Track. Crosby himself coined the famous lyrics, which live on today, "Where the surf meets the turf, down in old Del Mar …".

Del Mar is the only beach town in California that has not had its authenticity spoiled by developers. Del Mar’s residents over the decades have worked to preserve the village, restricting development and focusing on open spaces and wildlife preservation. Thanks to the efforts of an active group called the Friends of Del Mar, there will never be high-rise apartment buildings or billboards in the City.

Del Mar is the first town referenced in the Beach Boys hit "Surfin USA." The song mentions, "You’d catch ’em surfin’ at Del Mar."
